One of the fundamental doctrines and distinctives of Southern Baptists at large is their belief in “Eternal Security”. While it has often been phrased “once saved, always saved”, the heart of this doctrine holds that when a person genuinely comes to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ alone for their salvation, and is “born-again”, they become a child of God through the spirit of adoption (Romans 8:14-17), and can never again be separated from God in this life or the life to come. But is it an “essential” doctrine? Is it really that big of a deal; something we should know and believe?
