Weekday Musings with Pastor Brian - 10/23/14
I’m sure you’ve had one of those weeks… Like you took a couple of steps forward, but you’re looking around, and hey… you didn’t get anywhere! One of my greatest annoyances in life seems to involve technology. Maybe it is the fact that when I was born, black and white TV was still state of the art tech. Who knows? But a couple of weeks ago I had a significant update offered on all of my Apple devices (Pastor John will be quick to say, that’s my problem… should have stuck with a PC… LOL!). So… I did the update, and things were not all rosy in Apple-land. I had to download another update to fix what that one just messed up, but still had an issue… my word processor no longer played with iCloud. Where once I could type something in my office and open the same document at home… not now… and the frustrating thing is that they knew it. What’s with that?
So, this week I finally get to upgrade to a whole new operating system. Pages and iCloud now play nice. Sweet! But wait… now my computer doesn’t play nice with our copier. I can hit the print button now, and maybe 10 or 15 minutes and a few fingernails missing from now it will actually print. Really? And it gets better… the tech guy with our copier can’t figure it out. Oh… can it get any more fun?
Been there before too haven’t you? Oh… it might not be with a computer, but you can relate. I’ve come to understand (though I still need to work on practicing part of what I understand) that when life works as it should, well… we tend to just motor along, too often taking for granted that such things actually are working. But wait… something goes kaputt, or doesn’t work so well… and we can get all bent out of shape. And the crazy things is, the things that really twist us in emotional knots are often little things. Maybe there are a few of them piling up… but with the big stuff, we will often go right to God in prayer. Oh yeah… wasn’t it Solomon who wrote that it is the “little foxes that spoil the vineyard” (Song of Solomon 2:15)?
What about it, do we go to prayer over the little stuff? Do we take a few deep breaths and remind ourselves that like Paul, we too can be content with whatever state we find ourselves in… that we can do all things through Christ (Phil. 4:11-13)? In everything do we pray (Phil. 4:6)? Paul was in a prison when he wrote this stuff… maybe, just maybe I can rejoice in the Lord in spite of the little stuff. So… next time we meet, maybe we should ask how we’re doing with all the little stuff.
Pastor John is teaching this week, and I’m pretty excited. He’s going to be speaking to a term you’ve heard a good bit about lately, “discipleship”. I’ve taken a look at what he’s working on, and it’s good! You won’t want to miss. Next week I will be teaching on another perspective of persecution.
Last night’s Fall Festival was a blast. Wow… good heavens do we have some great cooks. I was in chili and soup heaven. Just saying. What was even cooler, was that I got to meet some new guests.
I am praying you have a most wonderful week. See you Sunday… if not before :-) Love you in Christ,
