Netanyahu and God’s Sovereignty! I happen to appreciate historical irony; I’ve been reading a lot of it in my study of the Gospel of John. For several weeks now I’ve been hearing and reading from most news and media sources that P.M. Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel didn’t really have a chance of being reelected; he was trailing in the polls; and even our own administration was working hard to get him defeated. So how did that work out? Hmmm… Let me share what Joel Rosenberg said in his blog this morning: “BIBI’S BLOW OUT: Netanyahu miraculously surges to 30 seats. Has 6-seat lead over Herzog… The American pundits were wrong. The Israeli newspaper polls were completely wrong. The TV network exit polls were completely wrong. The Obama team efforts to unseat an American ally were a complete failure. Netanyahu wasn’t losing. He wasn’t about to be shipped off to retirement in disgrace. This wasn’t close — this was a landslide.” It kind of reminds me of another famous historical irony: “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN” was the banner headline in the 11/ 3/1948 issue of the Chicago Tribune. But wait… Truman won! What… You mean news people and talking heads can be wrong? Gasp! What pray tell is this world coming to???
But I don’t want to make this about politics. You see, I happen to be one “of those people” who just happen to believe that our God really is Sovereign; and I see in what just happened an excellent illustration of that. Paul wrote: Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. (Romans 13:1 NLT emphasis added) Because of me, kings reign, and rulers make just decrees. (Proverbs 8:15 NLT). And check this out, The king’s heart is like a stream of water directed by the Lord; he guides it wherever he pleases. (Proverbs 21:1 NLT) I’m thinking there are some significant implications regarding our own government, be it the White House or Capitol Hill, our our own State Government. I’m also kind of thinking that all the machinations, all the schemes, and all the rhetoric and vilifications of man really doesn’t mean much when God has something to say about it. I can just imagine God up in heaven both laughing and weeping over man’s foolishness.
But again… this isn’t about politics; it’s about God’s sovereignty. You’ve heard them… The prognosticators of doom; the prophets of discouragement; they’ve said to you… “You’ll never be able to do this” “Amount to anything” “That’s impossible” “I don’t see any hope for your marriage” “Your child is a lost cause” “You’d be a fool to tithe, you don’t have the finances” “You’ll never be able to kick that habit”… Oh, and I could go on. The problem is, we all too often listen to them, when we should be listening to our God. Jesus told us that the enemy of our souls intends only to kill, steal, and destroy us; but He has come to give us life, and life more abundantly (John 10:10). Paul wrote that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Phil. 4:13). In Jesus we have hope, peace, patience, faith, and so much more. What does the world offer? Again… what does the world offer?
God’s Word is truth (John 17:17), and it is only truth that will truly set us free (John 8:32); free from fear (2 Tim. 1:7), worry (Phil. 4:6-7), and even the sting of death (John 10:28-29; 11:25-26). Proverbs 24:6 says that in the multitude of counselors there is safety, but even they must be wise, biblical (e.g. don’t go asking for marital advice from someone who is on their 3rd or 4th marriage… just saying). And yet, even then, at the end of the day, it is God’s Counsel that stands. When was the last time you read your Bible and heard what God has to say? How many times did you read it last week? How many times the week before? Are you living it, practicing it?
It is good to have Pastor John back. He got back Sunday evening, and is well. I am looking forward to seeing pictures and hearing more about his trip. We will be scheduling a time to have him share. Oh… hey… did you know Easter is coming right up? LOL! Yes, the year is flying by. We are planning to have our children do a special on Easter morning. I really enjoy having our children participate in worship. They aren't just our future; they're our present.
Have a blessed week, and I so look forward to seeing you Sunday, if not before. And remember always, your God is really in control. Now what is He asking you to do to partner with Him?
Love you all! Pastor Brian
P.s. Joel Rosenberg has an excellent blog, particularly on events dealing with the Middle East and Israel. Here’s the link: (flashtrafficblog.wordpress.com)
