ESBC’s Great Commission Challenge - 2019 marks the 50th Anniversary of our church’s founding. Rather than simply celebrate this event as a church with food and speakers, our leadership began asking “Is that all?” We are a Church of Jesus Christ, and at the heart of this is the heart of our God and what He revealed in His Word, The Bible.
In what is often referred to as The Great Commission, Jesus commanded His children, His followers… we who are truly Christians, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
And in His parting Words to His disciples Jesus said, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Ac 1:8) The Harrisburg area is our Jerusalem; it is our home; where God has called us to be ambassadors for Him (2 Corinthians 5:18-6:2).
We believe that we exist as a church to fulfill these commands of Scripture, and so much more. In fact, one of our Core Values as a church is: Reaching Out – We believe that a transformed life compels and enables us to reach those without Christ in a way that is faithful and creative. Another of our Core Values is: Meeting Needs – We believe that our church should express God’s love, addressing community concerns by doing good deeds and sharing biblical truths.
And besides, our very understanding of our mission as a church is articulated in these words: Our mission is to glorify God by modeling Christ, extending His Love, and building His Church.
GCC-50, as we are calling it, is a way to not only celebrate our 50 years as a church, but also our heartfelt love for our community, and our desire to be obedient to God’s Word for us (John 14:15).
Join us for a five week study on Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm starting December 5th.
